How does it feel?: “Bloody good!”
On the horse: “Touch wood, he hasn’t turned a hair since he’s been up here (in Sydney). You’d think he’d been doing it all his life.”
“He’s very, very casual, he just goes along. He’s done everything right at Peter Robl’s, I’ve got to thank Pete for the hospitality.”
I never have any dramas with him. He goes out every afternoon, in his paddock. Doesn’t worry, just goes out and has a pick. When he’s finished picking, he’ll just come back to the gate and yell out ‘I’ve had enough, bring me in.’”
On being withdrawn from the past two Kosciuszkos: “Third time lucky. The first time was just a freak accident, the second time there was nothing we could do about it. But he’s done the right thing this time, I’ve a had perfect preparation. He’s had two barrier trials at Wangaratta. He’s won them both and I couldn’t ask for any more.”
On when Far Too Easy loomed up: “He’s got a pretty big ticker. I wasn’t overly worried because I thought getting past him, that’s going to be the hard part.”
On keeping apprentice Tyler Schiller on board despite not being able to claim: “I stuck with him. A couple of big blokes rang me you know, blah blah. I rang Tyler and his man and I said ‘Do you want to ride him? Yes or no now on the spot.” and his man said ‘he’d love to’.”
Winning Jockey: Tyler Schiller
On the run: “I didn’t actually want to lead and when he just took me to the front under his own terms, I was just happy to go with the horse. I know how much ability he has and when he gave a kick at the top of the straight, I actually thought he was pretty vulnerable. But he’s toughed it out super and he’s a ripper horse.”
On worries during the run: “At the top of the straight I was actually pretty concerned that they were going to come to me, but by the 200m nothing joined him and he was super strong late and he’s a ripper.”
On winning on a big race day: “I’d say that’s one of my biggest thrills as well, same as the Town Plate at Wagga. When the horse won first-up off a big break, he’s just got so much improvement and I wish he wasn’t riddled with issues. But to see him win today makes it all worthwhile.”
“I’m more excited for Geoff and the owners. He’s a super horse and he’s had so many troubles but he just keeps overcoming them. Today he’s shown how good he is.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Damian Lane (Art Cadeau): “Good honest run with the big weight. He just had to be used early to hold his spot and it might have told on him late.”
Nash Rawiller (Handle The Truth): “He blew the kick.”
Chad Schofield (Mnementh): “From the draw we actually had quite a nice run three wide with cover. Just got pushed out a little bit deeper on the turn but was pretty plain up the straight.”
William Pike (Another One): “Disappointing. We had a good run but didn’t find under pressure.”
James Orman (Far Too Easy): “Very good run. Travelled well but the leader gave a good kick on the corner and we had to make up too much ground. Really good run.”
Sam Clipperton (Fender): “He has gone terrific. It was a funny old start. In the end we had to go to Plan B and we got a lovely drag into the race. The leader just got too easy a time. We flew home and I’m rapt I could get him into third for connections.”
Nick Heywood (Cavalier Charles): “He was well placed in this race today. It worked out great just wish something could take me into the straight.”
Tom Sherry (Anethole): “He reared out of the gates and the race was over from there.”
Reece Jones (Spiranac): “Just run off her feet a little bit. Never really got a chance to travel. Always felt like I was chasing. Her last 200m was really good hitting the line well.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Commando Hunt): “He was a bit naughty in the gates. He sat down on his backside.”
Hugh Bowman (Talbragar): “He’s definitely a horse for the future but it’s all a bit too soon for this year.”
Rachel King (Le Melody): “Massive run. Probably didn’t quite see out 1200m today but I think she will into the future.”
Winona Costin (Testator Silens): “Just got a little bit tired late.”
