Winning Trainer: Kris Lees (on phone)

“I don’t often send them down to Melbourne at this time of year but she’s a VOBIS filly and there’s some good money to chase. This was a suitable race and I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while with her.

“I was a touch disheartened when the barrier draw came out and it was a better field than I was expecting. But I expected her residual fitness to pull her through.

“Oli being on doesn’t hurt, too.”

What’s next: “There’s a three-year-old fillies race at Caulfield in a couple of weeks time over 1000 metre. She’s stabled there and doing her work there so you’d think she’ll handle it.”

Winning Jockey: Damien Oiver

“I’ve had a lot of luck with Fred over the years. Some good races even back to when we were both kids. It’s always nice to get a winner for him.

“She probably didn’t get around the left-handed way of going too well but she managed to get around the corner ok and hold them off. She’s a fast filly and likes the sting out of the ground but the feel of her. Good effort.

<Oliver said that Kris’ nickname is “Fred to his mates. I don’t know why.”>

On the track: “It’s between a 6 and a 7. It’s still pretty young, the grass, after the renovation. They’re chopping it out a little bit. This meeting historically when they’ve done their renovation and coming back in the winter, it’s not at its best. We’re getting through ok.

On getting one win closer to Craig Willams in the premiership: “Staying in touch. It won’t be easy. I think the fact that the minimum is 56 kgs gives me a bit of a chance this year. Normally we’re working off 54 minimum so I can lose a quarter of my rides over the winter when it is hard for me to get that weight. So it makes it a bit more appealing and we’ll give it a crack.
