“It wasn’t the two-mile race that we were after but at least it was two miles and it was good to see him win. She rode him an absolute treat. Ten-out-of-ten ride. It was good to see him win.
“He even wanted to duck out and shake my hand towards the line but I said ‘I’ll see you later’.
“He is a really nice horse. He’s a great type to look at. It’s just a shame that things have taken so long. I don’t like to tell him that he’s going to get gelded but it just might be the making of the horse. He gets a bit more genuine and he can knuckle down and do his job. He’s a great worker, sound as a pound, he’s a good eater, everything you want to see in a staying horse but he just lacks a turn-of-foot and that might come.”

“It worked out perfectly. The Snowden team wanted me to be there (in the run) and I thought ‘I don’t know if I can do that from barrier 11’ but there was a bit of speed early and we got into a perfect spot. He gave me a beautiful ride. He’s the ideal horse to ride in these races. You can slot him in, you can go, you can ride. Made my job easy.
“I rode him last year over 2500 metres and I was a bit unlucky not to get the win on him so it was good to get the win today for a great team.
Wayward: “He did. They told me not to get there too soon but he was just going so well. We probably got there a furlong too soon but he was just too good.”

Ciaron Maher on Junipal: “Will be nommed. He’s been up a long time but if were going to do it you’d expect to peak him and he’d probably need a rest after that. But we might put him in The Gong as well.
Ciaron Maher on Al Galayel: “He’s based at Ballarat and normally comes to Caulfield to do his gallops then goes to the beach for a few days and comes home. I reckon he looks fantastic. The gap between runs won’t worry him at all. He hasn’t missed any work. Last start we rode him forward but it’s just not his pattern. They ran easy sectionals but he’d rather be the horse descending on them. Big track will suit him. He does a lot of work there.”
Ciaron Maher on Bonvicini: “Very unlucky in the Matriarch at the 2000 metres. Just got held up, held up, held up. It’s a good horse - that was the first time we took him to 2000 metres. Really ran it out strong and finished the race on the bridle. It’ll have a good chance. I reckon it’s just coming right. It has sort of held onto its coat for a very long time and I thought it was the best it has looked, last weekend. I think it’ll run a very forward race.
Matt Cumani on One More Try: “She’s in great shape. I see there is 5-10mm of rain forecast for Saturday at this stage which would really help her. We’ll all be getting out and doing a rain dance. If she gets a bit of rain she’ll be a great chance. She’s been knocking on the door for a win. Really, she’s her own worst enemy because she doesn’t get herself in a good position early. We’d love to try and have her midfield if possible. If we can do that I think she can win a race like that.
“I think it’s going to be the toughest ever edition, probably, this year. She’s going to get a big win one of these days, I think. Craig Williams has a good association with her, he knows her a bit. I’d just like to see her a bit more forward this time if she can.”
