“I thought he was going to (finish) a bit disappointing but he took that time to really balance up but I love the way he ran through the line.

Thoughts when Ranting was three-wide on the turn: “I thought ‘how do you do that?’. It was quite amazing. I thought he’d had a really tough run. Just before the corner I thought he was going quite good bust just again he just lacked that really good smarts to come around the corner and put them away but he’s wound up and done it in the end.

Coolmore next: “My word. We’ve got two really nice horses going to the Coolmore and he’s going to be a very valuable colt one day and hopefully we can run really well in the Coolmore as well.”

Has he galloped Swats That and Ranting together: “Never and I never will either. They’ll both go to the Coolmore but I can sit back and say ‘don’t make me choose between my children’ and we won’t find out until Derby Day.

On the colt breaking the maiden here: “So much hard work goes into these horses and there’s a great group of owners in him. You get a colt that looks as good as him, he’s just an outstanding looking colt. To be able to win these races is what the Australian market is all about. You try and build their value and that’s why you don’t go back to a maiden, it does nothing for your value but a race like that just bumps you.

Winning Jockey: Ben Melham

“He’s a really good colt. I trialed him the other day and we had blinkers on him. We were tossing up whether to put them on or not and elected to go with them - thank goodness. It’s obviously sharpened him up, that trial.

“He left the gates a lot better today. He’s usually a lot sluggish out. He really hit the ground running and I couldn’t hold him any slower.

“They got into a tooth-and-nail battle on the corner and got away from me a little. I let him drift a bit in the straight away from them and he was too strong late. It was no surprise to me that he won today. Onwards and upwards for him.

“Anders began well and I began fast. Hanseatic was a bit moderate away. I thought I’d be last and off-the-bridle, but how things can change especially in small fields like that.

“(Anders) didn’t show his customary speed, I feel. He was not as quick as I thought he’d roll along. And then it built the whole way from there. But it was a good win by my colt and it was no shock.”

Luke Currie on Hanseatic: “It was always going to be pretty close and it was going to be hard to beat off the leader.

Asked if he was expecting Ranting to challenge Anders early on like what occurred: “Not really. He (Melham) set off on it early and Anders tried to go steady so he rolled up. It made a race of it.”

Mark Zahra on Anders: “I wasn’t (expecting to be challenged so early) but he was disappointing anyway. The horse at me on the outside set it up for the horse (Ranting) behind us.”
