On how well the horse goes over track and distance: “He’s always shown us a lot of ability on the track. He’s just been a bit of a slow maturer like the whole family have been.”

“We’ve always been confident that he’s better on wet ground. The track was probably playing against us a little bit today. I said to Mitch, with the way we were in the weight to get on his bike early. He made sure he got him there on the corner.

“It seemed a pretty long straight today but, no, it was good to see him solid right through the line.”

“I was a little it worried over the first 300m when Oli got on his bike. When we slid up outside the leader, I was a bit happier then. He got in really well in the weights today with the two-kilo claim and with the 55kgs. I think he relishes these sort of conditions.”

What’s next: “He was probably always going to the paddock after today. If the rain is going to hang around then we may have a look what’s on in a couple of weeks. I want to get him out in trip next time around so we may freshen him up.

“I’d love to have a live chance in the Cranbourne Cup. Something like that with him.

“Dad sponsored the Cranbourne Cup for many years so it’s a race that we’ve always loved to have a decent runner in, let alone win. But hopefully we’ve got the right sort of horse to have a red hot crack.

On possibly winning the Cranbourne Cup and then backing up in the Caulfield Cup: “You never know. His brother won the Mornington Cup, had his chance to get there (Caulfield Cup) but he didn’t get there.

“He’s only getting better this bloke. I don’t know what level he’ll get to but I hope he keeps going the way he’s going.”

Winning Jockey: Mitch Aitken

“He obviously loves the wet and was in a league of his own today. I’m happy where we were, I had cover early but I wasn’t too worried about being wide and in plenty of room.

“It’s just because he finished off the way he did.”

On whether Mitch thought he’d found the right lane: “He’s just a mudlark. He loves the wet. I thought it might’ve been a little bit better than the inside which was a but chopped up.”
