Winning Trainer: Luke Oliver

“He’s just a real racehorse. Every time we take him to the races he exceeds expectations. We thought he’d probably need the run today. We gave him a full three weeks in the paddock after his last run. We just gave him one sort of decent gallop coming into this and we’re looking to take him to Brisbane for the carnival.

“When he gets on the track he gives 110 percent. We thought we’d use today as a springboard to longer races. The pipedream with him is the Queensland Derby so we just wanted to see him hit the line today and he certainly did that.

“The last run, he was so strong at the end of the mile on a really heavy track at Moonee Valley so we were confident he’d get to the 2000 metres. But 2400 metres, we’ll probably find that out when we get there.

“The way he tries and puts in, and the way he relaxes in his races, he can switch off and take runs, they’re good attributes to get the trip.”

As a yearling - $38,000 buy: “He was a really nice mover, an athletic horse, and he had a good pedigree. We thought we’d take a chance with him and he’s got some great owners in him. It’s been good fun so far so hopefully it continues.”

Winning Jockey: Billy Egan

“Since the first time I rode him he was a big, awkward baby and I said to Luke that I really liked him that day at Pakenham. I know he had a whole straight to wind up and he didn’t work it out until the last 50 metres, and I was surprised how quickly he put it together at his next start when he won nicely and every time since then he’s maturing into a nice horse.

“He’s got bigger things in store for this prep so we wanted to not set him too much of a task and let him work home. Anyway, the runs came and he was too good.”

Towards QLD Derby: “That’s why we were happy to ride him so quietly (today) because those are the goals and it all has to start now. We have to ride him the right way to get the distance.”
