Winning Trainer: Matthew Brown

“He’s been a very unlucky horse. He’s bumped into some handy ones along the way and unfortunately just lost his way. But we regrouped, he had a throat op and after we tipped him out we knew pretty early this time that he was back.

“He put the writing on the wall here three weeks ago and it was good to see him back. We were pretty confident coming here today.”

When did he think the horse had it won: “You never know with this horse. We’ve been beaten too many times in photo finishes and it’s nice to be on the right side of one. He probably didn’t want any further today. He probably still looks a bit pretty and it probably tolled right on the line.

“It’s a bit of an emotional win. He’s been pretty hard work. He’s deserved this and there’s a lot of people to thank. Alana, my partner, she does all the work on him. Brian Higgins, who couldn’t ride him today because he’s on holidays and just the whole team. He’s a special horse to us.”

Winning Jockey: Beau Mertens

“I’ve ridden him before and I got there too soon on him and he has a good think. Terrific job by the team. It’s been a good job to get him back to where he is today and I’m sure they’re really rapt today.

“I think there’s been a few issues along the way so it’s been a great story with him. It’s a pleasure to be a part of it.

“He (Matthew) trains at Cranbourne and I’ve been doing a little bit of work for him while Brian is away so I probably can thank him for that one. Great to get a win on a Saturday.”
