“This is the first import that we’ve had and a big credit to the team. He’s had a long, long time off and for him to win first-up today over 1400 metres, that’s been a great effort. We’ve put in a lot of time with this horse and I’ve loved him from day one.

“It’s just a massive effort and I know how much improvement is still in him. This might only be a benchmark 78 but this horse has got a lot of ability.

Is it a surprise winning first-up: “Not to me. He galloped with Mahamedeis on Tuesday at Flemington and I rode him. It was just a great piece of work. I knew he was going to run well but with such a long time off, he paraded well before the race and he got a little bit nervous.

“We’re pretty pumped and we’ve been waiting to produce him for a while. I had him in over 1200 metres at Terang tomorrow but after that gallop on Tuesday I thought ‘no, we’re going to Caulfield.

“He’s got here with his rating of 75 and he’ll work through his grades.”

Grand Brisbane plans for stable: “If I can get him (Dice Roll) into a Stradbroke…. there’s a long way to go though. There is a race at Warrnambool for him, an Open 1400m race. He likes the wet so then it’s likely that, if he can win that, there’s a Group 3 race two weeks before the Stradbroke over 1400 metres. Wishful thinking but you never know.

“Mahamedeis - Doomben Cup and Brisbane Cup - he raced like he wants further. Sirconni will go up for the Stradbroke, too.

Energy around the stable: “We’ve just moved to Flemington and moved into a brand new barn. We’re concentrating on quality, not quantity. I ride them all at trackwork.”

Winning Jockey: Rhys McLeod

“Ever since he’s come to the stable he’s given us a good feel even though he’s had 18 months off. The test was how he would go and he’s done a good job. The stable has done a really good job to get him here.

“I know they went hard enough and they’d come back to us. To this horse’s credit he dug in deep and had to to win. Good win.”
