Winning Trainer: Lindsey Smith

“Champion jockey knew that he had enough horse to keep the speed and keep the other horse out. He knows our horses are quite tough. A very clever ride.

“He had the wrong colours on. I noticed when I got to the gates. They’re for Lido Beach. Generally he should have Plastered’s colours on. Anyway, I’ll cop a fine for giving myself up there, won’t I.

“It was a good win. I like the second horse and just having the second race start probably didn’t know how to finish it off. But she was tough from start to finish which is hard to do. Like the wet.”

On Shane Jackson returning to ride in the Grand Annual: “I’m filthy! I said ‘don’t fall off for God’s sake’. I wasn’t planning on turning up on Friday morning but I’ll be worse than his wife Lauren. I’ll be at the end of the couch <wincing> every time he jumps. He just told me the news then and knowing him he’ll pull it off.”

Winning Jockey: Damien Oliver

On Aaron Mitchell winning earlier: “It was great to see. He’s from a great racing family in WA. A talented rider himself and obviously one of the taller guys you’d see in the jockeys room. He’s got some great skills and seeing how polished he was in his first jumps race, it was great to see.”

On Continuance: “She’s very fast. I wasn’t expecting to lead but she began so well and she really relished the conditions and fought on strongly.

“I’ve been lucky enough to team up with Lindsey (this week) and he sent a strong team this week and it’s nice to be on board with a Warrnambool trainer instead of chasing them, which I usually am.”
