Winning Trainer: Chris Waller (Jo Taylor speaking - Stable Rep)
Spoken to Chris Waller: “Yes we did, we had a very brief conversation, albeit a very emotional one before she (Verry Elleegant) came back. I really wish Chris could’ve been here today, he certainly deserves this one.”
On Verry Elleegant’s preparation into the race: “Her performance in the Cox Plate was fantastic. She was just really tough, we always thought that Moonee Valley just that final turn could be a sticky spot for her, she was in a tricky part of the track and the other two horses who are very good horses, just got the split on her, but she kept finding all the way to the line.”
“We gave her the time that she needed. We allowed her to tell us what she wanted to do all the way through the Cox Plate. After the Cox Plate, Steven Arnold rode her for the first time Tuesday morning and he said “jeez i think she’s come on even more,” and obviously that is very good feedback to hear after a big race like that.”
On Verry Elleegant becoming a racing-great: “Like you said she had a tough task ahead of her today. 57kgs is certainly a lot to carry and then combine that with the barrier, she certainly had a mountain to climb, but she got in a really good position and we were turning for home you wanted to start getting excited but you don’t want to go the early crow either.”
“She’s certainly a beast of her own and full credit to Chris (Waller) and to the entire team across the whole country. We get to be here on race day and hold these Cups but we couldn’t do any of it without the people behind the scenes that help us get there.”
Winning Jockey: James McDonald
Thoughts on Verry Elleegant: “I love her to bits. She has been so good to me. I can safely say she is a champion now isn’t she? She knows.”
“She was relaxed the whole way. I can’t believe what has just happened. I never thought I would ever win one. I’ve always dreamed of winning one but they are so hard to win. Dreams do come true when you’re piloting superstars.
“I’ve been saying from Saturday onwards, her fight and determination just takes her so far.”
Thoughts on Chris Waller: “He just goes through his processes and makes sure every box is ticked. It is why he is as good as he is. I am so lucky to be in his team. We have a lot of luck together and we know each other so well.
On winning the Melbourne Cup: “I just didn’t think this day would ever happen. I ride in these races, I really want to win but sometimes you can overthink it and try too hard.
“I was very confident in the mare today. Thoughts (of winning) went through my mind at the 500m when I saw Incentivise getting shoved along but I knew he would fight. There wasn’t a horse that was going to come from behind me, it was just a matter of catching him.”
On family not being there to celebrate: “I wish Covid wasn’t on because my parents would be here. My brother, he’d be watching and I just wish they were down. ”
On his following in New Zealand: “I’ll be bombarded from back home with all of the support. They will just be elated. I have a huge fan base (in New Zealand) and I’m very lucky to have it.
On his association with Verry Elleegant: “To pilot horses like Verry Elleegant each and every carnival is just a huge privilege and it worked out really well for us today. It doesn’t always happen like that and you take the good with the bad but today we were lucky enough to win a Melbourne Cup.
Early days with Verry Elleegant: “I butchered her that day as well (Vanity), I gave her a bad ride. But then she just went on and won an Oaks.”
Thanking the Chris Waller team: “To Chris’ team who ride, Chris Harwood and Charlie Duckworth who organises everything. If I keep naming people I will leave someone out, the whole team there have just done a marvellous job with her. You can see how far she has come, she relaxed over 3200m and showed a dazzling turn of foot. Like I’ve said since Saturday, there wasn’t another nine time Group 1 winner in that race - she was it. I wouldn’t have thought there was one other horse in that field I thought could run third in a Cox Plate. She was ready for it.
On getting the ride: “It is just funny how things fall your way at times. When you’re jogging (sic) on the spot. One door closes and another door opens, you just have to be patient.
Winning Owner - Brae Sokolski
“Extraordinary. I’m lost for words. That’s the most humbling moment in my life.
“Incentivise, obviously, he was the hype horse. We did think he would win but we had so much faith in her still. At the 200 metre mark when I saw those colours to the outside, I knew the race was over because she just cruised into it.
“It’s a dream come true having a runner let alone a winner, let alone a quinella. I’m the luckiest human being on the planet at the moment.
“So special. I’ve got family and friends here and we cheered them home together. What a privilege. I can’t believe how fortunate I am.
“I feel for my New Zealand brothers in Verry Elleegant back home. They would love to have been here and we’re so close. The Australian owners are here which is fantastic but ‘boys back in New Zealand, love you guys and we’re going to celebrate hard and we’ll make up for it once we can.
Jumped the fence: “I’m so apologetic about those (COVID) protocols but I just wanted to be with the mare and also with Incentivise so the adrenalin got the better of me. But at these moments, they’re once in a lifetime.
“Honestly, she is incredible. And to bring her her tenth Group 1, a Melbourne Cup, that takes her - in my mind - in the upper echelons of the pantheon of Australia’s greatest racehorses.
“She will not be out of place amongst the greatest horses we’ve seen. To win a Caulfield Cup, a Melbourne Cup as a mare on top of all those weight-for-age races, it is extraordinary.
“An what a ride from J-Man, the training performance from Chris Waller, the whole team, Jo Taylor, that’s the proper A-Team.
Winning these races at a young age: “I feel so privileged. I don’t deserve it but I’ll take it. The great thing is celebrating with people you love - that’s what it’s all about. I’m in awe of this mare. I’m lost for words.
Beaten jockeys:
Jye McNeil - Twilight Payment: “He wasn’t able to get into his usual role and at the halfway point he really struggled.”
Brett Prebble - Incentivise: “Courageous effort. His first time to this trip and it took a champion to beat him.”
Craig Williams - Spanish Mission: “Couldn’t have been any more impressed with his gallant performance. I had the option of being one horse in for the entire race but I decided to be on the back of Grand Promenade, I thought it would take me nicely into the race and we did. But when Verry Elleegant came around me, she was towing. My horse did a really good job and was fighting it out for second. Great job by Andrew Balding and his team for the planning and what a gallant warrior to go to battle with. Thanks for the opportunity.”
John Allen - Explosive Jack: “He was disappointing. He whacked away, but he’s missing a bit of scrap.”
Damian Lane - The Chosen One: “Really proud of this horse. He’s run a massive race. Trained to the minute and ran his best.”
Damien Oliver - Delphi: “He ran well. We had a great run. He feels like more of a mile-and-a-half horse than a two-miler to me.”
Damien Thornton - Ocean Billy: “Disappointing.”
Selino - Ron Stewart: “Just a little further back than I would have wanted to be. Just couldn’t find the right horse to take me into the race. Overall I thought it was a good staying effort.”
Lachie King - Johnny Get Angry: “He’ll go out for a spell and then assess the options after he comes back.”
Daniel Stackhouse - Knights Order: “He’s just not going anywhere at the moment.”
Luke Currie - Persan: “I didn’t think he would lead but he was sort of out at the 600 (metre mark).
Blaike McDougall - Carif: “It was a good effort. Got in a nice position. He travelled well. Just the class factor when they quickened up, he was under pressure.”
Fred Kersley - Master Of Wine: “Nice.”
Rachel King - Pondus: “Just raced a bit dour and couldn’t sprint off that speed.”
Kerrin McEvoy - Grand Promenade: “He’s run a good race. We didn’t have any luck. Got caught wide the trip but he stuck on well.”
Patrick Moloney - Miami Bound: “She wouldn’t go in the first 1000 metres. If she had’ve jumped and travelled she might have run top eight. She whacked away and got the ones that were tiring.”
Harry Coffey - Port Guillaume: “He didn’t run out a strong 3200 metres in a strong pressure race.”
Craig Newitt - She’s Ideel: “She ran well again.”
Dean Holland - Tralee Rose: “She had a really nice run. She toughed it out but she’s probably not sharp enough when you need her.”
Teo Nugent - Floating Artist: “Super run. Every time we’ve raised the bar with this horse. He measures up and landed in a beautiful spot out of the gates. We followed Incentivise and he travelled so strong the whole way. I thought at the top of the straight that he gave a lovely kick for me and he’s run a very good fourth. I’ve very happy with him.”
Michael Dee - Great House: “Had a good run. I could feel he was coming under pressure about the 600 or 700 (metre mark). He was gone by then but he tried really hard all the way to the line. Expected a little bit better but he tried hard today.”
Glen Boss - Sir Lucan: “He’s a juvenile. I had no power from the 1000 metre mark.”
