“In these small horse fields we just left it to Willie Pike. He jumps well, like he has been, and he was able to dictate today and got it really easy in front. Mr Quickie was quite far back and it was a sprint home. He was super today.”

Surprised that he wasn’t taken on in front: “I was. But in these six horse fields you never really know what happens. I think it just shows that while everyone thought he was one dimensional, he can lead, he sit behind, he can sit last, he can come from anywhere. He’s a super horse.”

Future: “There’s a lot of options. He’s got quite a high rating now so he is hard to place at this time of year but we’ll have a good look and see if there is anything suitable.”

On being in front: “It was a bit of a ‘whoopsie daisy’ moment. He jumped fast, he jumped clean. I suppose the only other horse that was likely to lead was Iconoclasm and I beat him out that far that I knew there was only one option for me.

“I thought I was suspect in front. I wasn’t sure how he’d go doing that but its just the way the race unfolded.

“I tried to plan it so I didn’t go too slow later in the piece so they didn’t rush up to me and catch me by surprise. I thought I rolled them along enough from the 800 (metre mark) that if they were good enough that they would be able to catch me but he was too good today.”
