“First of all I have to thank Tony and Calvin and the team for giving me an opportunity. I’ve done a little bit of work for them lately and they’ve rewarded me with a couple of rides so it was great to get a win for them.
“It was a really good effort. Probably a bit unexpected but you can never underestimate them.
“Tony said that they rode him quiet a couple of times and he hit the line ok so as we drew good we probably didn’t have to be last, just cuddle him the whole way which I did. It was a genuinely run race which was good and when they took off at the 800 (metre mark) we scouted wide and I was able to sneak through and I was on the best horse today.
Future: “I do a bit of work at Ballarat and I’ve opened up there now. James Winks has just started helping me out, actually he starts tomorrow. A bit of coaching and to get my butt off the couch, just work a little bit harder and hopefully these opportunities come along.”
Further on engaging a jockey coach (new trend) - but seems to be a jockey everywhere all the time: “I just wanted to start to get a bit better quality rides, to be honest. I’m getting a bit older now so I think it’s time to have a crack and try and do something rather than just floating around the bush. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but I just need to pick myself up and get a bit more motivation. I thought I’d hire (James) ‘Winksy’ to get me off my bum a little bit and just try and get better rides.
“I was probably exaggerating when I said I was sitting on the couch (too much) because I was still at the races every day, but I just need to get the better quality rides and try and get in with a few bigger stables. It makes your job a lot easier when you’re riding better horses.”
