“He’s a very good colt. Still doesn’t quite know what to do. Only time we’ve had a bunny there for him in a trial he really quickened good. In his two runs he hasn’t had anything to chase and he’s got a bit lost, as you saw there. When he puts it all together he’s going to be a very good colt.”

Was he being ‘coy’ before the Flemington run and still today: “He was a horse first time up the straight on a Heavy 9. He’s a very good colt. He’s topline but he’s still got to learn what’s going on. Like Luke said, are we going to be brave enough to ‘snag’ him because the one morning we snagged him at Pakenham, if you have a look back through his Pakenham jump outs, we snagged him back there one morning and he quickened like a genuine weight-for-age horse.
“You’ve seen him lead-up in two races and got totally lost. So, we’re probably going to have to grow a set of balls, find a fast horse and snag him because we’ve him put his head on his chest and really quicken. Everyone else hasn’t seen him quicken yet like I’ve seen him quicken.
“But he’s got to learn to bring that to the races. A bit different with the adrenalin when it gets pumping and a bit different to pottering around at Flemington where there’s six horses going to the barriers for a jump out and no one to wind you up. He’s going to relax better there.
“But he’s a very good colt.”

“He’s doing it all on raw ability, he’s very much a raw product at this stage. I like him a lot. He’s very cantankerous, knows he’s a bit of a lad, but his manners on race day are very good. We’ll put up with him at home while it works and he’s going good anyway.”
A few quirks: “I wanted to be away from the fence, but he wandered around a bit himself. I tried to give him a good look at the post on the way around there, but it’s very difficult for an animal, and a very fast one, as things seem to come up very quickly and their attention is caught. Talent got him home, but inexperience almost brought him undone.”
Getting off the rail: “They’re sheep (the other riders). This is the first time this meeting has been rail true for a good while. It’s seen a bit of wear. I didn’t think it was a real disadvantage. I didn’t trust my horse was good enough to be in the inferior bit, so I was happy enough to be where I was. The boys will determine where we go off the back of that. I was happy where I was.”
