“That was nerve wracking. I thought we were no chance. He missed the kick, boy, I’m overwhelmed to be honest. That was some win.

“He had to dig deep, he had to show his true qualities as a quality stayer. What a great win.

“He’s so lightly raced and he’s come over here with a bit of expectation. When you’re paying the money that you’re paying for these sort of horses you expect to get bang for your bucks. He’s shown another side of his versatility today. He was back in the field, settled, stalked, and ran through the line very good.

“The favourite was off and gone - he had us on toast. To our horse’s credit he dug deep and wanted to win. They’re the attributes I love. It’s those one-percenters, when they’re there to be had, he just seems like the style of horse that he wants to do it. He wants to achieve and I think that’s a great attribute whether it be a human or a horse.

“I’ve played professional sport all my life and that’s what wins you games and wins you races when you’ve got to dig deep and find that extra centimetre and get a result.”

What’s next: “Dunno. We’re going to let the dust settle. Soak in the victory. This is quite big for me. I’m overwhelmed and appreciative of having a horse like this in my care and to be able to place him well. Congratulations to Jordie on a great ride.”

Last start failure at Flemington: “He’s still learning. He did a lot wrong today, too. He was going to win by two or three lengths. He laid from the 600 to the furlong mark. He was laying in on one rein. He had more to give but it took a fair bit of effort to get to the outside of that horse. But once he got there his ability came through.

“But if we can iron out those quirks it’s going to hold him in way better stead because he’s going to lose races doing that than winning time. I just think it’s greenness. He was a bit like that in Ireland. He was a bit wishy-washy. We might have to tinker with a bit more gear.”

<Two rides today for two wins>

“He was just a bit fractious in the gates today. He just sat back as they opened so had to go to ‘plan B’. I was happy enough with the run following the favourite everywhere it went. Coming into the straight he still wants to lay in a bit so there is still some improvement once we iron out the kinks but he gives me the feel that he could be a nice stayer.

“He’s got a heap of ability and I think if he went straight from the top of the straight he would have won by further. It was just trying to get the best out of him while trying to keep him in a straight line. But he gives me a nice feel and the Gelagotis team are going a great job with him and it’s great to be a part of it.”
