“He loves Flemington, obviously. Rod Fitzroy, one of the part owners, wanted me to wait for Flemington and said we can wait a month. Nothing to do with the fact that he used to be the chairman here.

“He broke his maiden here three years ago to the day at 100-1. It’s a great thrill to win the great man’s race - Les Carlyon. I saw that when it came up and I thought ‘oh wouldn’t you love to win Les Carlyon’s race’. Great man. Didn’t know him well but great memories of Les.

“He could make front page news about a Manangatang maiden. He could find the charm in anything in racing.”

Winning Jockey: Damien Oliver

“On a sad note, I’d like to say to my good friend Jason Louey, he lost his wife to cancer this week and he’s got two young kids and I just want to let him know that we’re thinking of him and it’s really sad to see him lose his wife so young.”
