Winning Trainer: Mitchell Freedman

On the breakthrough: “It’s a bit of a weight off the shoulders to be honest. He deserved to win a race like this and he’s racing so much better than he was last time around.

“He’s just had a few things go against him, he might get accused of being a bridesmaid and a non-trier but I think he’s putting everything into his races at the moment and things just haven’t gone his way.”

On the win: “That horse was wandering around in front of him and he couldn’t get clear air. But that probably suits him as he’s only got a short, sharp sprint and back to 1100m today suited.

“We gave him a week down at the beach with Dave Noonan who’s done a lot of work with the horse this time around and probably been the difference in it all. We’re really happy with the team and thinking outside the box, it’s working well with him.”

On pushing on with his preparation: “His action felt great on Tuesday, he worked really good and he’s brought it here to the races today. Everything he’s doing at the moment suggests he can keep going.

“We’re mindful that he’s probably not up to the spring grade so while we’re a fit horse on the scene we might take on a few of them that are returning and see how we go.”

Winning Jockey: Will Price

Nice to get one on him: “It’s good to finally get him across the line first. Obviously he’s been knocking on the door. Credit to Mitch and his team and Wylie Dalziel and connections for sticking with me. He’d been knocking on the door, racing consistently and it’s good to see him get one up today.”

What made the difference: “Mitch said during the week that he sent him straight to the beach to freshen him up after his last run. I think that was the key. He was a fresh horse. He can be slow away, but he jumped nicely and we were able to track up and be in a nice spot. We just have to cover him up for as long as we can and then let him have that last crack at them. The race unfolded nicely.”

Likes racing in big fields: “He does. A couple of times when he’s gone close he’s drawn inside gates and we’ve had to revert back to the inside. Today it was a similar story. It was a big field but we were able to get clear running, so it was good.”
