“Just looking at the day, we planned to go forward and get a head start on the favourite (Nikau Spur). Declan rode him perfectly. Good courageous horse. He’s taken a long time to mature but any horse to win four straight is a good effort and I think that was quite a strong race.

“He’ll go to town especially midweek now. He puts himself on pace, especially days like today. The favourite, we got him struggling at the 600 (metre mark) which is always handy.”

Winning Jockey: Declan Bates

“He needed to be tough. He’s a real legend of a horse. So straightforward to ride. He begins well and he puts himself where you want him. That leader dropped off a bit sooner than I wanted and just left me in front a long way out but I had a very willing partner and he was just too good.

“Since I’ve been on him he’d been going alright so I’m happy to stay on board.”
