Winning Trainer: Julien Welsh

<This was Julien’s first winner at Flemington>

“He’s a funny horse. You can’t pick him during his work. He’s such a laid back customer and he can reel off a nice piece of work at trackwork but you really can’t go on that. You’ve got to get him to the races and see what he’s like in his stall.

“When he’s fired up you know he’s there on song. I thought last week’s race was going to suit him better over the 2000 metres but I took his temp that morning, he had a temperature so I scratched him.

“This was the alternative race for him. Hey, listen, he finished strong and we’re very happy with him.

“He gives you the impression at the stalls. He gets the ears back and he’s hard to saddle. He kicks the wall and when he’s like that he’s usually on song.

“Terrific ride, too, from Carleen. Carleen’s ridden this horse all the time. She’s my apprentice and I couldn’t be happier with her. She’s ridden a double today at Flemington and made me really proud.

“As well as the horse winning, with her winning that is fantastic.”

What’s next: “I had 2600 metre final planned for him so it’s still in the realms of possibility but that race last week was the lead-up for it. We’ll just have a look and see what else is around.”

Winning Jockey: Carleen Hefel

“That win there means a lot more. You do all the work on the horse and especially for Julien. It makes the win a lot more special.

“I saw he was kicking his heels up a bit but once you’re on his back he’s a gentleman. He’s a beautiful ride and today he was the most switched on in a race he’s ever been - the best he’s felt.

“He’s a pretty tough horse. He can feel them coming and he puts his ears back and he keeps digging in.”

<Carleen has a week off now>
