“He’s just a buzzy little horse and he tends to take a while to settle. I think through the preparation I was hoping he’d get a bit more settled but he was probably going the opposite way and getting a bit keener. It didn’t matter in the end, it was good.

“You win Group 1s and that sort of stuff but there’s no greater feeling than winning a feature jumps race with a nice horse. It’s a good sport, the jumps enthusiasts love it. Whether it’s risk and reward, I don’t know, but winning a jumps race is a huge thrill.

Smaller/weaker field more attractive today: “Absolutely. We were going to Hamilton on Tuesday-week for a $30,000 race. It’s hard to come here off his form. We knew there were issues and excuses but we still don’t know how they’re going and we just wanted to get him back in the winner’s circle, really, so Hamilton was going to be the task.

“ When we saw the nominations and acceptances (for this race) we thought we’d roll the dice and have a shot at the stumps.”

Personally - possibly biggest jumps win: “He was the favourite for the Australian Hurdle last year and he was scratched on the way to the gates. This is some form of consolation, I suppose, in a big way. The Dominator won a couple of features and a couple of other horses. But this is a good fun thing for the owners having jumpers, they love it.

Drier track today: “I think it was perfect today. He doesn’t like it too heavy. A little jar out of it does help though.

Stallion Raise The Flag: “That’s why we bought this bloke. Wayne Stewart at Whiterobe Lodge in New Zealand, we gave him the brief of trying to find a jumper by Raise A Flag for us. He called us and said that we could have this bloke for $30,000. He’d had one win in 24 starts on the South Island so it was a leap of faith buying him and thinking that he’d come over here and measure up but they're natural-born jumpers these horses and we’ve got another couple at home now so it’s great.”

Winning Jockey: Clayton Douglas

“It’s been a good race for me. I’ve run a few placings but I’ve never been able to win it. It was good to get the monkey off the back.

“He had cover but he was (keen). I rode him two starts back at Pakenham and he overdid it outside the leader so I didn’t think I’d be far away in a small field but the plan was to always get cover. He jumped terrific and jumped himself into the race. He was the winner a long way out.

“I thought I had the leader covered, I just didn’t know where the favourites were. I had a peep over my shoulder and still felt like I was going pretty good.

“He’s a nice horse and he’s going to be better next year as well.

“He’s a tough horse. I’ve had a little bit to do with him now and just doesn’t seem to give up. He’s pretty tough. He ran out a strong trip today and probably overdid it a touch early. He’s got a bright future.”

Combining training, riding on the flat and jumps, and all: “I’m working really hard. I’ve got a great bunch of people supporting me and I’ve got a good group of staff. That’s what you need - a lot of good people behind the scenes and I’m very appreciative.”

Had confidence the horse could deliver: “Yes, I did. I thought steeplechasing would be his go but was still a little worried that he might be suspect late but he’s a really tough horse and he’s going to be a nice Brierley horse next year.”
