On the close finish: “It was a painful watch down the straight, a couple of stayers whacking away, we got the bob on the line and he’s in great form. It was a bit of a relief when the photo came through.”

Future plans: “He’s probably at his strongest prep, it's taken a long time for him to be the finished article. He’s ready to have a long campaign. His fitness is pretty good, he’ll probably come on a touch from that. There are some loftier options, you’ve got the Warrnambool Cup and the Ramsden which would be possibilities, or he could just be that notch below.”

On the win: “It was a bit harder than I thought it was going to be, but at the end of the day we just needed to be first past the post.”

During the run: “In the middle stages when Steel Prince came up on my outside it really fired him up for a hundred metres to a furlong where he was going really keenly in himself and I felt him start to empty out over the final stages, which would’ve been the effect from that.”
