“Lovely ride by Harry. He’s been mixing his form or looking to find his form for a little while, this horse. He’s been doing some hurdle schooling and that must have really brought him on.

“He’s a hard horse to read and I wasn’t over confident. Harry, he saved a lot of ground and followed Ollie through and that was the winning move.”

Tactics: “I left up to Harry but down the back he was tacking up and in his last run I think he was about 20 lengths behind the last horse. He’s a funny horse but he was right today.”

On Bit Of A Lad: “He’s ok. I just thought being first-up and after the Brierly and he’s got bigger fish to fry later in the year.”

Winning Jockey: Harry Coffey

“The plan was to follow the whole field and have him finishing strong and keep in touch. But he took me by surprise and traveled well. I landed in a nice spot.

“I wasn’t that keen on the inside but I saw the ‘greatest of all time’ go there and I thought I’ll follow him because if I get back and they’re not happy with me I can say that if I can’t follow Damien Oliver, who can I follow?

“When Ollie was down there I followed him through and I was traveling really well. I noticed Ollie was doing it as well, we were really hard up on the rail and it worked a treat.”

Sort of what Oliver said after the line: “You’re a little bastard sometimes.”

“His ride was a gem and I had nothing to lose so so why wouldn’t you follow him.

“By golly the horse is in for a good prep if he goes like that.”
