TAB Opens Brisbane Carnival Markets

TAB has released its pre nominations markets for the Brisbane Winter Carnival features with some very recognisable names at the top of betting.

Chris Waller and James Cummings have the early favourites for the four big Group Ones – the Doomben 10,000, Doomben Cup, Kingsford Smith and Stradbroke Handicap.

The Waller-trained Nature Strip heads the market for the Doomben 10,000 on May 11.

Nature Strip, last start winner of the G1 Galaxy, is a $4.50 chance ahead of Osborne Bulls and Pierata both at $6.

In the Doomben Cup (May 18), Waller’s Youngstar heads betting at $5 but hasn’t raced since finishing sixth in the Melbourne Cup behind Cross Counter.

Last season, Youngstar thrived during the Brisbane carnival by winning the G1 Queensland Oaks and G2 Doomben Roses before producing a huge run in the G1 Queensland Derby when third to Dark Dream.

Coolmore Legacy winner Kenedna and Japanese import Kluger are the only other runners in single figures at $8.

The Cummings-trained Osborne Bulls is a $4.50 equal favourite in the TAB Kingsford Smith (May 25), sharing top billing with Galaxy runner-up Pierata.

Local hope Zoustyle ($6) is close behind with Champagne Cuddles and another Cummings runner, Home Of The Brave, being the only others in single figures at $8 respectively.

The culmination of the Queensland carnival will be the TAB Stradbroke Handicap on June 8 where there are three favourites in Osborne Bulls, Pierata and Zoustyle all at $6.

TAB’s Andrew Georgiou said there has been early interest in several entries.

“Zoustyle and Home Of The Brave have had specking in the 10,000 market while local runner Boomsara is the most popular in the Straddie market at $15,” he said.

“It was no surprise to see our traders open the markets the way they did with Waller and Cummings having the favourites in all these features.

“The pair really dominated The Championships and could continue that winning run in Brisbane.”
