The James Cummings-trained Roheryn (5 g ex Mannington by Danehill) came out on top of a close finish to win the Show County Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday and in the process handed Darley Stud stalwart Lonhro (Octagonal) with his 89th stakes winner.

The five-year-old gelding, who was having his 14th career start and first at stakes level, finished strongly to hold off the advances of the fast-finishing Probabeel (Savabeel), beating her by a neck. Special Reward (Demerit) was another nose further back in third.

“Having thought about trying to make more of a miler out of him than a sprinter-miler, I think we’ve unlocked the key to him and it’s proving very beneficial,” Cummings said.

“He’s a bit of an underrated horse. He was in a good race today and had to make a big leap and he did that.”

Bred and raced by Godolphin, Roheryn is the son of Blue Diamond Prelude (f) (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Mannington (Danehill) making him a half-brother to Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Benicio (More Than Ready) and Romneya (Red Ransom), who won the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1500m) in 2009.

Mannington is also the grandam of Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Always Allison (More Than Ready), French Group 3 winner Rosa Imperial (Pivotal) and Rosental (Pivotal), who won at Listed level in France.

Roheryn was Mannington's last foal and she died in 2017.

Lonhro’s progeny is headed by 12 Group 1 winners and he will stand at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST) in 2020.

The five-year-old gelding becomes the seventh stakes winner bred on the Lonhro / Danehill (Danzig), headed by 2011 TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Benfica.
