The Robert Quinn-trained Marcher Sur L'eau (3 g Press Statement - Gipsy Countess by Sadler's Wells) produced the performance of the day when he got off the mark at the first time of asking in a maiden over 1350 metres at Newcastle on Tuesday.

The three-year-old gelding skipped away from his rivals, eventually beating Lava (Reset) by an emphatic three and a quarter lengths, while Tipping Point (Bull Point) was another head away in third.

Marcher Sur L'eau was purchased by his trainer for $20,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale in 2019 and the Hunter Valley-based Stud will offer his half-brother from the first crop of Newgate Farm’s Russian Revolution (Snitzel) at next year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and he has been catalogued as Lot 340

The colt becomes the fourth winner out of winning Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) mare Gipsy Countess and she is herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Toccet (Awesome Again) and the dam of Listed scorer Ethan’s Baby (Offlee Wild).

Further back this is the same family stakes-winning quartet Courtley Candor (Fight Over), Miss Walkie Talkie (Miswaki), Canaletto (Iron Duke) and Chartino (Concertino).

This year Gipsy Countess produced a filly by Press Statement’s barnmate Headwater (Exceed And Excel) and has been covered by that same stallion this year.
