The Team Hawkes-trained Yukon (3 g Vancouver - Phantom Queen by Charge Forward) shed his maiden status at the first attempt when he took out the Vale John McDermott Champ Maiden Handicap (1350m) at Wyong on Thursday.

The son of the Coolmore Stud-based Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) prevailed in a close finish to beat Jana (Lonhro) by a nose, while Big Lion (Dream Ahead) finished another quarter of a length further in third. In winning he became the 33rd winner for his sire.

Purchased by his trainers for $360,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Widden Stud draft, the gelding is one of four winners out of dual-winning Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Phantom Queen.

Phantom Queen herself is out of stakes-placed Flidais (Timber Country) making her a half-sister to 2015 The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Sweet Idea (Snitzel) and dual Group 2 winner Showtime (Snitzel) as well as Listed scorer Rush (Charge Forward) and the dam of Listed winner Supreme Idea (I Am Invincible).

Further back this is the same family as dual Group 1 winner Electronic (First Norman).

Phantom Queen’s two-year-old is called Adair (American Pharoah) and he too is trained by Team Hawkes.

Vancouver has 11 lots catalogued at next year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
