The Team Hawkes-trained Vandoula Lass (2 f Vancouver - Doula by Commands) got her career off to the best possible start when she broke her maiden over 1000 metres at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday.

Vandoula Lass showed a good turn of foot to reel in long-time leader Translation - who is by first-season sire shuttler Frosted (Tapit) - eventually beating her by two and three-quarter lengths, while Scream Queen (Holler) was a further half a length away in third.

“We did think she’d come here and win,” said co-trainer Wayne Hawkes.

“She’s an absolute dream (to work with), she walked into the mounting enclosure and walked around as if she owned the joint and looked like a five-year-old gelding.

“It’s always good when a two-year-old has got ability but they’ve also got the attitude.”

Purchased by Orbis Bloodstock for $70,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the KBL Thoroughbreds draft, the filly becomes the first winner out of six time-winning Commands (Danehill) mare Doula, who died in 2019.

Further back the filly’s third dam is Listed scorer Asawir (Last Tycoon), who produced Ghareeb (At Talaq), while her stakes-placed daughter Alharir (Jeune) produced Grade 1 winner Ertijaal (Hard Spun), Grade 2 scorer Mushreq (Flying Spur) as well as Listed winner Thimaar (Zabeel).

Asawir is also the grandam of Group 1 winner Rewaaya (Singspiel), while this is also the same family as fellow elite level winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense).

Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro), whose oldest crop are three-year-olds, stood at Coolmore Stud for a fee of $30,250 (inc GST) this year.
