Widden Stud Victoria-based stallion Star Witness (Starcraft) chalked up his 20th stakes winner when the Chris Munce-trained Rhapsody Rose (2 f ex Ritzy by Medaglia d'Oro) prevailed in a close finish to win the City Property Carter Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Last seen running third in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) on the Gold Coast on May 8, the two-year-old filly showed a brilliant turn of foot to deny Hoover Lucy (No Nay Never) by a nose, while Morioka (Maurice) was another neck away in third.

Purchased by her trainer and Arthur Hoyeau for $120,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Bhima Thoroughbreds, the mare is the first winner out of winning Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) mare Ritzy.

Rity herself is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Fiveandhalfstar (Hotel Grand) and Group 3 scorer Wordplay (Fastnet Rock).

Further back the mare’s Listed winner Quibble (Ruling) - the dam of Group 1 scorer Cross Swords (Grosvenor), while further back this is the same family as Group 2 Pierina (Savabeel) and Listed scorer Showemup (Showcasing).

In 2019 and 2020 Ritzy foaled colts by Arrowfield Stud-based stallion Dundeel (High Chaparral).

The filly becomes the third stakes-winning two-year-old for Star Witness, joining Pearl Star and The Barrister. The stallion will relocate to Widden Stud’s new Victoria base and he will command a fee of $16,500 (inc GST).
