The James Cummings-trained Alegron provided his former shuttle sire Teofilo (Galileo) with his 104th stakes winner when he won Monday's VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington.

Last seen finishing third in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) just over three weeks ago, Alegron came from back in the field, weaved his way through runners and pulled away in the final 100 metres to defeat The Cunning Fox (Reliable Man) by two and a quarter lengths.

"He is a St Leger winner now anyway and we're pretty satisfied that we've got a promising horse going forward," Cummings said.

The South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Morphettville on May 14 is a likely target for Alegron.

"The South Australian Derby is a Group 1. It's looming on the agenda for the horse," added Cummings.

"We kept him lightly raced early in the preparation for a reason and hopefully we can capitalise on it."

Teofilo shuttled to Australia for six seasons between 2009 and 2017. He is now based at Darley's Kildangan Stud in Ireland where his 2022 fee is advertised at €30,000.

His progeny include multiple Group 1 winner Happy Clapper, 2018 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Cross Counter and 2019 winner Twilight Payment while his Group 1 winning son Kermadec stands at Northwood Park in Victoria where his 2022 fee has been set at $16,500 (inc GST).
