Well-bred Rustic Steel strong in Scone Cup

Six days after winning The Coast (1600m) the Kris Lees-trained Rustic Steel (4 g ex Ten Carat Rock by Rock Of Gibraltar) added the Listed Scone Cup (1600m), providing his Newgate Farm-based sire Deep Field (Northern Meteor) with his 14th stakes winner.

Under Kerrin McEvoy Rustic Steel was tough to the line and beat Dr Drill (Dansili) by a half length with Atishu (Savabeel) a close third.

"He had to pull out all stops and he was tough all the way to the line," Lees told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"He's a real racehorse and it's a pleasure to win for Ron and Judy (Wanless) and a nice race like the Scone Cup is terrific."

A $500,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase in 2019 from the draft of Newgate Farm, Rustic Steel was bred by Blake Sandblom and Henry Field Bloodstock and has now won seven on his 13 career starts and placed in a further three for prize money of almost $650,000. He is out of the 13-year-old mare Ten Carat Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar) an unraced daughter of Shantha's Choice (Canny Lad) making her a half-sister to Redoute's Choice (Danehill).

Deep Field's 2022 fee has been set at $88,000 (inc GST).
