Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) got his first winner on the board when the Andre Fabre-trained Cherie Amour (2 f ex Angel Falls by Kingmambo) proved far superior to her rivals in the Prix des Colonnes Morris (1400m) at Clairefontaine on Thursday.

The filly was having the second start of her career having been beaten into third when sent off the well-fancied favourite at Deauville on May 21, but she made amends for her disappointing debut when comprehensively beating Chiri Tsubaki (Siyouni) by two lengths with another length back to Perfect (Iffraaj) in third.

Purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson for €250,000 at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, Cherie Amour is out of the unraced Kingmambo (Mr Prospector) mare making her a three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner National Defense (Invincible Spirit), who shuttles to Sun Stud in Victoria.

The filly's second dam is Group 3 winner Anna Palariva (Caerleon), who in turn is the dam of Group 3 winner Anna Salai (Dubawi) and Listed-winning pair Iguazu Falls (Pivotal) and Advice (Seeking The Gold).

There has been much anticipation surrounding Shalaa's first runners in Europe and his first yearlings were well received in both hemispheres, with 65 yearlings in Europe selling for an aggregate of €7,420,000 at an average of €114,000 last year, with his most expensive yearling to sell being a colt who was bought by Narvick International for €600,000.

Meanwhile in Australia, Shalaa has been equally well-received, with 59 yearlings selling for a total of $9,786,500 at an average of $165,872 this year, while a colt who was purchased for $600,000 by John Sadler was the most expensive of his first crop to sell in the southern hemisphere.

Shalaa will stand the 2020 season at Arrowfield for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).
