The Charlie Appleby-trained Lazuli (3 g ex Floristry by Fasliyev) produced an impressive performance to win the Scurry Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown and as a result became stakes winner number 183 for Darley’s perennial sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).

The three-year-old gelding looked the winner from a long way from home and he surged clear to beat Keep Busy (Night Of Thunder) by a decisive three and a half lengths, while Dream Shot (Dream Ahead) was another three and a quarter lengths further back in third.

“He ran very well at Newmarket last weekend and he was very good today, very quick,” said winning jockey William Buick.

“He gave me a good feel and coming back from six to five now, he will be a good sprinter.

“He would stay six, but he is quick enough for five and you can ride him with that bit more confidence that he will get home.

“For a relatively inexperienced horse, he has a lot of race experience and obviously a lot of speed.

“I thought it was a decent race, I didn’t think it would be easy for him, but he handled it well.

“He had a wind op since he disappointed at the end of last season and obviously it has worked well.

“He’s a three-year-old sprinter, he feels like a proper sprinter and I can only see him improving. I certainly wouldn’t want to set any limits on how high I think he can go.

“Charlie will make a plan, but the programme is pretty tricky for three-year-old sprinters. I think he’s a very nice horse in the making, that’s for sure.”

The Godolphin-owned gelding is out of Listed winner Floristry (Fasliyev), making him a half-brother to fellow Listed winner Inspiriter (Invincible Spirit).

Floristry herself is a half-sister to Zibelina (Dansili). The gelding’s third dam is Talented (Bustino), who in turn produced Listed scorer Friston Forest (Barathea) and Group 2 winner Carlton House (Street Cry), who finished second in the 2014 Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill.

Dubawi stood at Dalham Hall for a fee of £250,000 and he will be represented by his Group 1-winning son Too Darn Hot in Australia in 2020, who will stand at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).
