A trip to France proved worth it for Roger Varian when Angel Power (3 f ex Burning Rules, by Aussie Rules) landed the Prix De Liancourt (Listed, 2100m) at Longchamp on Thursday and in the process handed Lope De Vega (Shamardal) his 73rd stakes winner.

The two-year-old filly kept on well under pressure to beat Extreme Fast (Le Havre) by three-quarters of a length. Chorba (Olympic Glory) finished another length and quarter back in third.

Purchased by Glidawn Stud for 35,000gns at the 2017 Tattersalls December Foals Sale and she was then purchased by Saville Donald for 150,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year.

Angel Power is a three-quarters brother to Killavullan Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Blue De Vega.

The filly’s third dam Bougainvilla (Acatenango) produced dual German Group 3 winner Burma Gold (Java Gold) and the dams of Group 3 winner Divil (Siyouni) and Listed scorer Bay Of Poets (Lope De Vega).

Bougainvilla herself is out dual German Group 3 winner Britannia (Tarim), making her a half-sister to dual Group 1 winners Boreal (Java Gold) and Borgia (Acatenango) - the dam of Group 3 winner Bermuda Reef (Oasis Dream).

Borgia herself is a grandam of Prix Vermeille (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Baltic Baroness (Shamardal) and Listed winner Baltic Rock (Rock of Gibraltar).

Lope De Vega’s progeny is headed by 11 Group 1 winners, including Australian elite level scorers Santa Ana Lane, Vega Magic and Gytrash, while he is represented in the southern hemisphere by his son Belardo, who is standing at Haunui Farm in 2020.
