Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) sired his 17th first-crop winner as the Hugo Palmer-trained Noman (2 c ex Mathool by Alhaarth) shed his maiden status at the second attempt in over a mile and a half at Wolverhampton on Saturday.

Last seen running third on debut at Newmarket, the two-year-old colt beat Mickydee (Twilight Son) by a length and three-quarters, while Folk Magic (Dubawi) came home another length and a quarter away in third.

Purchased by Westpark Farm for €30,000 at the 2018 Goffs Ireland November Foal Sale, before selling to Avenue Bloodstock and Hugo Palmer for 70,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year, the colt is out of the unplaced mare Mathool (Alhaarth), whose four winners are headed by Listed scorer Erysimum (Arcano).

Mathool herself is a half-sister to Listed winner Sahool (Unfuwain) - the dam of Group 3 winner Laraaib (Pivotal), while she is also a half-sister to the dam of multiple Group 3 scorer Maraahel (Alzao).

Further back the colt hails from the same family as Group 1 winner Mustashry (Tamayuz), Group 2 winner and now successful sire Gutaifan (Dark Angel) and Group 1 winner Ventura Storm, who also landed the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) in 2018.

Shalaa got off to a good start in Australia, with his son Shaquero landing the Breeders' Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on the first weekend of juvenile stakes racing and he is currently standing at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).
