The Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Bharani Star (4 m ex Bay Of Islands by Dubawi) made a successful seasonal return when she landed the Rothesay Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Ayr on Wednesday and in doing so handed Gilltown Stud-based sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) his 78th stakes winner.

The daughter of Sea The Stars wast seen running eighth in the Galtres Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) at York last August, having finished sixth behind Love (Galileo) in the Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) on her previous start in July.

Having her first start for new owners Fairlawns Racing on Wednesday, the filly surged clear to beat Astadash (Zoffany) by a length and three-quarters. A La Voile (Invincible Spirit) was a further length and a quarter further away in third.

The mare was purchased by Broadhurst Agency at the 2017 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale for €85,000, before being bought by former owners Phoenix Thoroughbreds for €270,000 at the Arqana Deauville August Sale the following year.

Bharani Star is herself out of the unraced Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Bay Of Islands and she is herself a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Saddex (Sadler’s Wells) and Sabia (Sadler’s Wells) - the dam of dual New Zealand Group 1 winner Lizzie L’Amour (Zabeel).

The mare’s third dam is Group 1 winner Aviance (Northfields) - the dam of top flight-winning pair Denon (Pleasant Glory) and Chimes Of Freedom (Private Account), who in turn produced elite-level winners Good Journey (Nureyev) and Aldebaran (Mr Prospector) as well as Grade 3 scorer Sea Of Showers (Seattle Slew) and Listed winner Tomisue’s Indy (A.P. Indy).

Sea The Stars has produced 14 Group 1 winners including Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Fifty Stars and Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) victor Shraaoh. He stood the 2021 season at Gilltown Stud in Ireland for a fee of €150,000.
