Bigger things expected from Chris Gibbs-trained son of Super Easy

The Chris Gibbs-trained Ever So Easy (3 g Super Easy - Cycee Nugget by Volksraad) got off the mark at the fourth attempt when he broke his maiden over 1200 metres at Ruakaka on Thursday.

The son of Super Easy (Darci Brahma) jumped well from barrier two to sit just behind the speed for jockey Craig Grylls. He remained handy throughout and quickly tackled his rivals turning for home and ran away to a comfortable three and a half length victory over Holyhead (Pierro), with a further length and a half back to Jaydeear (Ego) in third.

“I was a little bit nervous because I had changed my training with him quite a bit,” Gibbs said.

“He is quite clean-winded, so we just backed right off and took him in really fresh. We never galloped him any harder than about 15 to a furlong and he just came into that race beautifully.

“He has got a good brain. I am really happy with the result.

“The horses who beat him were very good horses. I threw him in the deep end. I kept looking around to try and find a suitable race and there weren’t many decent maiden races around at the time, so I thought we would let him have a go.

“I think we got a really good line on him.

Gibbs is now unsure where he will head with Ever So Easy, but if he continues to improve a trip across the Tasman could be in the pipeline.

“I needed to see him produce the ability that we knew he had and do it on race day. There are lots of ideas that have been thrown around. He’s bred to be more a sprinter-miler. We will see how we go and COVID restrictions could change a lot. If we can organise going over to Brisbane, that could be an option.”

Purchased for NZ$50,000 at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale from the Archer Park draft, the gelding is out of unraced mare Cycee Nugget (Volksraad), who was herself purchased by Miss CS Archer for a mere NZ$1,500 at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Sale when carrying the gelding in utero.

Cycee Nugget has produced five further winners including Rio Nugget (Captain Rio) - the dam of Listed scorer Ferrando (Fast ‘N’ Furious).

The gelding’s second dam is unraced Gold Ingot (Bold Venture), the dam of Listed scorer Golden Era (Stylish Century) and the dam of fellow stakes winner Let Go (Encosta De Lago), while this is also the same family as Sound Journey (Good Journey), who landed the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) in 2008.
