Hana Beatson - Riversley Park

GOLDEN SIXTY winning the The Hong Kong Classic Mile Picture: HKJC

How many years have you been bringing a draft to this sale for?
We debuted our first draft at the New Zealand ready to run sale under our Riversley Park banner in 2015, where we have forged an enviable record taking the leading vendor title for the last three years, last year’s sale was a highlight for us as not only were we leading vendor on aggregate selling 31 of our 32 horses grossing NZ$6,267,500 but also taking out the leading vendor on average title, with an average of NZ$202,177 for horses sold.

Who are your most successful sale graduates?
Golden Sixty would be our most successful graduate, he was sold from our 2017 draft for NZ$300,000 to Francis Lui and has gone on to become a superstar in Hong Kong winning 12 races from 13 starts, he is also the second horse in history to win the triple crown and was named champion four year old at last years Hong Kong Racing awards.

Is there anything in particular that you look for in a yearling that you are buying to breeze?
There are many things we consider when buying weanlings and yearlings to pinhook for a ready to run sale, firstly we look for a nice athletic type that moves well with good conformation, when it comes to pedigree we look for a few different things that would suit a variety of markets.

How do you think your draft this year compares to previous years?
Our draft this year comprises some high quality two-year-olds as have our previous drafts throughout the last five years. We always aim to offer the best quality horses possible.

Of your 2020 draft which are your standouts?
We believe our draft this year has some excellent types, from proven sires such as Savabeel, No Nay Never, Per Incanto, Darci Brahma, Ocean Park to budding first seasons sires Star Turn, Teleperion, Wrote, Air Force Blue.

It's hard for us to pick a standout as they are all top quality two year olds who will suit a variety of markets and have all breezed up in great style.

How do you think the sale will be affected by the current travel / COVID situation?
Covid has affected many things within the economy, it is inevitable that it will probably affect some people buying at this sale as they cannot attend the sale physically, but we believe there are some fantastic bloodstock agents here in New Zealand that can inspect horses for the international clients that cannot attend, there is also plenty of information available for prospective buyers to look at, for example this year we have prepared individual sales videos for each horse in our draft along with providing photos on each horse, these can be viewed on our website www.riversleypark.com

If anyone is interested in purchasing a horse from our draft then we are happy to discuss and provide any extra information that is required.

Have you seen any changes in the way breeze up horses are prepared in New Zealand over the past few years?
Personally we haven’t seen any changes in the way horses are prepared here in New Zealand, I think for ourselves we have a great system in place when it comes to educating our horses and we always do what is best for each individual horse.
