The first crop of Cambridge Stud shuttler Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) was well received on the Gold Coast earlier this month and that popularity continued at Karaka 2020 - Book 1 with, after two days of selling, 29 yearlings having sold for NZ$4,660,000 at an average of NZ$160,690.

Bruce Perry has bought the two most expensive lots by the sire having secured Lot 24, a filly out of Listed winner Papilio (Redoute’s Choice) on Sunday for NZ$320,000 and then on Monday paid that same price for a colt by the son of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaf) from the draft of Woburn Farm with Melbourne-based trainer Danny O’Brien.

The colt was catalogued as Lot 255 and is out of the unraced Zeditave (The Judge) mare Assertiveobsession who has produced two winners to date in stakes placed gelding Ochceedee (Power) and four-time winner Smiling Assassin (Cape Blanco).

The colt’s second dam is Sommes Sound (Assert), dam of three-time Group 1 winner Assertive Lad (Zeditave) and his dual Group 1 winning sister Assertive Lass, dam of successful sire Reset (Zabeel).

“I really love the Almanzors I have seen,” said Perry.

“We have looked at them all and picked through them and I’m really happy to have secured the ones we have managed to get so far.”

Perry has bought five lots in partnership with O’Brien and a further nine lots for a total spend of NZ$2,600,000.

“We’ve been fairly successful so far, although we have also missed out on a couple that I liked,” Perry said.

“I think it has been a strong sale, especially for the ones you like and that’s how it should be.

“I tend to live in my own little bubble and focus on what I’m doing, so I haven’t been able to analyse the results too much, but I know it has been hard going on a number we have managed to buy.

“I’ve got a very strong relationship with Danny and we’ve had a couple in partnership before.

“He has looked at the catalogue online but I’ve done the inspections, given him my list and then he has come back to me with what he is keen on.

“He has been brilliant and it has made my job a lot easier.”
