Victorian-based farm sell Written Tycoon colt for $380,000 and finish day two as leading vendor by average

Woodside Park Stud came to the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale with four yearlings and a very specific aim. The Victorian-based farm had set themself a goal to finish the sale as one of the top four vendors by average (with three or more lots sold) and on Monday James Harron and the Freedman Brothers helped Woodside’s dream become a reality as they went to $380,000 for a filly by the farm’s former resident Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

The filly by Written Tycoon was the headline act of Woodside’s quartet of yearlings they offered as the Sydney sale and at the end of selling on day two the farm is leading the vendors table by average having sold for yearlings for $880,000 at an average of $220,000.

Woodside Park’s CEO James Price - who will be relinquishing his role at the stud after they announced a huge restructure last week - said they were over the moon with the results over the last two days.

“We are absolutely stoked with the results this week,” said Price. “We bought four horses and the aim was to be in the top four vendors by average. We are sitting top at the moment and if we could remain there we would be absolutely delighted.

“So that was our aim when we selected the horses for the sale in September and we have achieved the results we wanted, so the whole team here and back at the farm could not be more delighted.”

Price admitted the $380,000 price-tag for the Written Tycoon filly took him by surprise, but his confidence was boosted when James Harron took a shine to the filly during the inspections.

“If you had asked me whether she would have made that price two weeks’ ago, I would have been surprised,” said Price. “But she arrived at the sale and didn’t put a foot wrong and just coped with the whole process.

“When you get judges like James Harron, mentioning to the leader that she was perfect you get a good feeling, then when you see him standing out the back behind a post nodding away, you just think: ‘I hope there is someone that will go with him.’

“We are delighted and $380,000 is a lot more than we expected so we go home very happy.”

Catalogued as Lot 461, the filly is the second foal out of the winning Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Ariaz.

The filly’s third dam is Group 3 scorer Shelbourne Lass (Brocco), the dam of Elusive Touch (Elusive Quality) and the grandam of Listed winner Anjana (Sepoy).

Woodside Park’s draft was made up of two colts and a filly by the now Arrowfield Stud-based sire Written Tycoon, while they offered one daughter by his son Rich Enuff, who was purchased by Mystery Downs and John Foote and Price was particularly satisfied by the result.

“Inspections were strong, but the filly by Rich Enuff really surprised us,” said Price. “She came here with a reserve of $40,000 and the expectations on her was that she would make $80,000-$100,000, but she finished at $180,000 and I think that just goes to show that if you have a good physical with clean x-rays you are in good shape because this market couldn’t be healthier.”

Catalogued as Lot 386, the filly is the third foal out of the dual-winning Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Tiz My View.

Tiz My View herself is a daughter of Listed scorer Miss Tizzy (Cee’s Tizzy). Further back the filly shares a page with Grade 2 scorer Awesome Baby (Awesome Again) and stakes winner Aimable Grace (Alphabet Soup).

At the close of trade on day two, Written Tycoon was leading the way in terms of average (with three or more lots sold), with three yearlings by the sire grossing $700,000 at an average of $233,333.

Written Tycoon - who sired a new stakes winner on Sunday when Double You Tee (6 g ex Kandy Korn by Flying Spur) won the Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) - is currently sitting second in the leading sires table in Australia behind the now pensioned Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) with his earnings totalling $10,636,130, just under $2,000,000 clear of the third-placed I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).

The Arrowfield Stud resident is the leading sire by stakes winners in Australia with 11 stakes winners this season, two ahead of I Am Invincible (9) with Not A Single Doubt in third with eight.
