All indicators show large gains during first session of OBS March Sale of Two-Year-Olds

Two lots sold for US$550,000 on the opening day of the OBS March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Florida on Tuesday. The first of these was a colt by Violence (Medaglia d'Oro) who was bought by Spendthrift Farm from the draft of Kirkwood Stables. Later on in the session, Donato Lanni went to that same price to secure a filly by Munnings (Speightstown) from the draft of Eddie Woods. 

The Violence colt was catalogued as Lot 48 and breezed in a time of 9.4 seconds.  The colt is out of the winning Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) mare Lemon Belle who is herself a daughter of dual Grade 2 winner Quennie Belle (Bertrando). Her six winners are headed by Grade 1 winner Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song) who in turn produced Beholder Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Unique Bella (Tapit). 

Violence stands at Hill 'N' Dale Farm in Kentucky where his 2021 fee is advertised at US$25,000. 

The filly by Coolmore-based Munnings meanwhile had breezed in a time of 10 seconds and was catalogued as Lot 216 She is the first foal out of the winning Lemon Drop Kid mare Show Me who is herself a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Aegean (Northern Afleet). 

During the opening session 160 of the 203 lots offered were sold for US$18,482,500 with the clearance rate at a healthy 79 per cent. These figures were up on the 2020 sale when 145 of the 241 lots offered (60% clearance) for US$12,944,500. For ten per cent more horses sold this year the aggregate was up 43 per cent. The average was up 29 per cent this year to US$115,516 compared to US$89,617 seen during the opening session of the 2020 sale whilst the median rose 25 per cent to US$62,500 from US$50,000 a year ago.
