Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 9f) second, Mandaloun (Into Mischief) returned to winning form on Sunday when the Juddmonte Farms homebred came from last to first to win the Pegasus Stakes (Listed, 8.5f) at Monmouth Park.

With just four rivals to face on Sunday, the Brad Cox-trained colt got up to score by a neck from Weyburn (Pioneerof The Nile) with two and a half lengths back to Dr Jack (Pioneerof The Nile) in third.

He will likely now return for the Haskell Invitational (Gr 1, 9f) back at Monmouth Park on July 17.

"We didn't expect that," Cox said.

"We thought we'd be tracking the leader or on the lead and we were last. We faced 18 horses and had a great trip in the Derby. Then we came here, faced four horses, and we had trouble. That's why they call it racing luck and that's why they run the race."

Mandaloun has now won four of his seven career starts and placed in a further two for prize money earnings totalling US$1,051,252. He is one of two winners out of Irish Group 2 winner Brooch (Empire Maker) who is herself a half-sister to dual Listed winner Caponata (Selkirk) being out of fellow Listed winner Daring Diva (Dansili).

Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) stands at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky where his 2021 fee was set at US$225,000.
