Australian-breds Oh Susanna and Traces shared the spotlight with progeny by Captain Al on one of South African racing’s biggest days at Kenilworth on Saturday.
The Australian-bred 3YO filly Oh Susanna (Street Cry x Sharp Susan by Touch Gold) won the G1 Sun Met (2000m) while Traces, a 2YO colt by champion sire Snitzel, won the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes.
Oh Susanna, bred in Australia by the late Darley sire Street Cry from Sharp Susan (Touch Gold), is raced by her breeders Drakenstein Stud.The Justin Snaith-trained filly has now won back to back G1 races after taking out the G1 Paddock Stakes (1800m) at the same track earlier this month.
Ridden by Grant Van Niekerk, she beat Last Winter (Western Winter) by half a length with Marinaresco (Silvano) third and the favourite Legal Eagle (Greys Inn) fourth.The Brett Crawford-trained and Arrowfield Stud-raced Traces (Snitzel x Traceability by Charge Forward) became the 77th stakes winner for his sire when he beat Carlita (Oratorio) by two and a quarter lengths,
A half-brother to Traces by Redoute's Choice was purchased by Hawkes Racing from the Arrowfield Stud draft of the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $750,000.Meanwhile the late stallion Captain Al sired a G1 double on Kenilworth’s big day with both trained by Justin Snaith.
The 4YO Sergeant Hardy (Captain Al x Hard Lady by Hard Up) won the G1 Cape Flying Championship (1000m) and the exciting 3YO filly Snowdance (Captain Al x Spring Lilac by Joshua Dancer) added the G1 Majorca Stakes (1600m) to go with her G1 success in the Cape Fillies Guineas at her previous start.Captain Al, who has sired 83 stakes winners, died last year at the age of 20.
The G1 Cape Derby was won by Eyes Wide Open, a colt by Dynasty from Live Your Dreams (Jallad) who had won the G1 Champion Stakes (1600m) as a two-year-old last July.
