Waller On A High With Youngstar

3 minute read

Exciting filly Youngster provided her late sire High Chaparral with his 113th stakes winner when she raced to Queensland Oaks favouritism with a dominant win G2 Doomben Roses.

The Chris Waller-trained Youngstar (High Chaparral x Starspangled by Danehill) defeated stablemate Another Dollar (Ocean Park) to give their trainer a strong hand for the G1 Oaks at Doomben on May 26.

High Chaparral, who shuttled to Australia between 2010 and 2014, died at Coolmore Stud in Ireland in 2014 at the age of 15.

He also had a Group winner in New Zealand on Saturday when Highlad won the G3 Rotorua Cup.

Chris Waller’s stable manager Charlie Duckworth said the Queensland Oaks (2200m) had always been a long-term aim for Youngstar, who has now won three of her six starts.

"Obviously on her pedigree being by High Chaparral we felt she was going to be an Oaks filly. About this time last year we thought about this race," Duckworth said.

"She was never going to be running in the Oaks in the spring or at Randwick in the ATC Oaks.

"That's what's great about Australian racing - unlike Europe where you've only got three weeks between the English and Irish Oaks, here they're spread over seven months.

“There's not as much need to rush them which allows you to determine which Oaks to go to."

Youngstar was purchased for $200,000 by Anton Koolman Bloodstock at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the Bowness Stud draft and has now returned $164,201 prizemoney.

She is one of four winners out of the winning Danehill mare Starspangled, a sister to G3 winner Downtown.

Her second dam is the multiple G1-winner User Friendly (Slip Anchor), who produced eight winners and is a half-sister to the dam of G3 winner Gender Agenda (Holy Roman Emperor).

Bowness Stud enjoyed a fine day of results as the stud’s shuttle sire Myboycharlie produced his 16th stakes winner when consistent mare Siren’s Fury’s won the G3 Dark Jewel Classic at Scone.

Highlad (High Chaparral x My Lady's Chamber by Arena) is a 4YO who won the Listed Wanganui Guineas as a 3YO. He is trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.
