Syndicator Finds His Dream Filly

3 minute read

Thousand Guineas winner Amphitrite is a dream filly for rookie Queensland syndicator Cameron Bennett.

Amphitrite was a bargain yearling buy by Bennett’s Flying Start Syndications and became their first Group One winner with her classic success at Caulfield on Saturday.

Launched three years ago, Flying Start and trainer Darren Weir paid $50,000 for the Sebring filly Amphitrite at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Sale.

Amphitrite is out of Ocean Dreams, a Redoute’s Choice mare who won two races. She is a three-quarter sister to the G1 NZ 1000 Guineas winner Powley (Noble Bijou) and a half-sister to the Australian G1 winner Marble Halls (Nassipour).

The dam Ocean Dream had been purchased by Goldin Farms for $190,000 from the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale in 2015 when offered in foal to Sebring. Ocean Dreams has since produced a 2YO filly and a yearling colt by Akeed Mofeed.

The fifth G1 winner by Sebring, Amphitrite has won four of her seven starts for prize-money of $469,905.

The Thousand Guineas win was her fourth in succession and followed a victory in the G2 Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington.

Cameron Bennett is looking forward to growing his Queensland-based syndication company.

“This is my third year and we’ve got a lot of young horses,” he said.

“We’ve got about 30 horses on the books and we buy tried horses as well.

“My price range is between $20,000 and $70,000, no more.

Bennett has been involved in the racing industry for nearly two decades and sold horses as an agent for five years before turning to syndication.

The late sire Stratum, who stood with Sebring at Widden Stud until his death in 2016 at the age of 14, was represented had his seventh G1 winner when the 5YO entire Land Of Plenty won the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

Land Of Plenty (Stratum x Dancing by Spectrum) has had four trainers since he was purchased for $80,000 by Shane Nichols Racing at the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

A 30% share in Land Of Plenty was later offered by Grandlodge Thoroughbreds at the inaugural Chairman’s Sale in Sydney where original part-owner Clive Smith secured the share for $32,000,

Land Of Plenty was with Graham Begg before joining current trainer Darren Weir this year and has now won six races from 24 starts including three at stakes level for prize money of $877,580.

Land Of Plenty is one of eight winners from the G2 winner Dancing, dam of South African Listed winner Macduff (Street Cry).

Dancing is a half-sister to Miss Vita (Alleged), dam of dual G1 winner Zavite (Zabeel).
