3 minute read

Former Australia galloper Hostwin Meraki has really found his calling on Macau's sand surface at Taipa.

Prepared by Tony Fung, Hostwin Meraki has won five of his eight starts on the all-weather surface with four of his wins over the 1510m course.

The now five year old was a $A120,000 purchase at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sales in 2016 and commenced his racing career with Gary Moore at Rosehill in Sydney.

From 12 starts he managed a Newcastle maiden win over 1200m and a C1 win at Hawkesbury over 1300m.

Arriving in Macau at the start of last season Hostwin Meraki took an instant liking to the sand winning first up on the all weather in December.

He then had some niggling leg problems resulting in two below par runs but the gelding recovered to win three straight over 1510m in March, April and first up in July.

His most recent win on September 29 took his earnings close to the $HK1million for popular owners Tam Siu Keung and his wife with the gelding's rating rising from 67 to 99 points.

His most recent win gave jockey JB Hamel his tenth winner in Macau since arriving for the last three months of the season.

The Frenchman has firmly established himself in the enclave is sure to remain in the top bracket in the riders standings.

Trainer Danny Wong has got his hands on an exciting 3YO in Oriental Joyful who has recorded two straight wins on the sand.

By the UK Group winner Redwood from the Bianconi mare Bianca Bay, Oriental Joyful is a half brother to the NZ G1 winner Dukedom and is bred to get a lot further than his recent win over 1050m.

Wong is also training former Victorian galloper Captain Fabulous, who led all the way to win over 1350m under Dayversom Barros on September 29.

Captain Fabulous is a son of Good Journey and raced in Victoria as Lux Interior when prepared by Henry Dwyer winning two races from eight starts at Geelong and Wodonga.

Desi Style is another that is right at home on the all weather surface and picked up another win on Sunday over 1050m.

Ridden by Frankie Choi, Desi Style capped off a great day for Tony Fung making three wins for the afternoon.
