Below are a few little stats heading into Day 4 of the Royal meeting.

PLATINUM JUBILEE STAKES

  • While the King's Stand Stakes has been a great race for Down Under sprinters, the race now known as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes has also seen Australian trained or formerly Australian trained horses to the fore.
  • As mentioned earlier in the week, the all-time great undefeated Black Caviar got to meet the Queen after she fell in to win the then Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
  • There was much discussion about how she had done in England and despite concerns, she got to the gates and then held on as Luke Nolen tried his best to make sure she wasn't given a punishing run given her issues. Hearts skipped beats in both Hemispheres as the French challengers got to her but the post came up just in time.
  • It all started with Choisir in 2003 as he did the big Royal Ascot sprint double. Few had tried it over the years, leave alone a colt from the other side of the world but the hulking chestnut eventually crossed to the stands' rail and got home for Newcastle's Paul Perry.
  • Takeover Target had an incredible affinity with the Royal meeting. He would go there in 2006 winning the King's Stand and running 3rd in the Golden Jubilee. 2007 saw him run 4th and 2nd and then in 2008 he ran 2nd and 4th in both races too.
  • He'd head to England once more in 2009 but was scratched from the Jubilee with a temperature. Trainer Joe Janiak gave him a last chance in the July Cup but after his failure there, he was retired.
  • Caulfield Guineas and Oakleigh Plate winner Starspangledbanner was sold to race in Europe then stand at stud. Transferred to Aidan O'Brien he'd win this race and then the July Cup too. Problems post racing meant he didn't produce a huge swag of offspring but one famous one was recent Cox Plate winner and Prince Of Wales's Stakes globetrotter State Of Rest.
  • Another to win the final day G1 was Coolmore purchase Merchant Navy. A winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes as a 3yo, he went to Ballydoyle and added a Greenlands Stakes in Ireland then a tight margin victory in the Diamond Jubilee.

  • The Hardwicke Stakes is a mile and a half G2 run on the last day of the carnival. Many top horses have won it then gone onto bigger things. Almaarad won it and a Cox Plate the next year. Jeune won it and a Melbourne Cup the following year. Oscar Schindler, Harbinger and Crystal Ocean also are winners.
  • Hurricane Lane was third at Epsom in the Derby then won the Irish Derby, Grand Prix de Paris and the St Leger before placing in the Arc. That will be the ultimate aim again but he kicks off in the Hardwicke before the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud then one of the Arc Trials. Godolphin hasn't had a huge Royal Ascot to date bar Coroebus in the St James's Palace as the main highlight. But Hurricane Lane, by Frankel is a tough stayer who Charlie Appleby says thrived through winter.
  • 4yos have won 13 of the last 14 Hardwickes.
