July Stakes preferred option for Ropey Guest

3 minute read

Margarson colt has improved again since Coventry

George Margarson is favouring the Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket from Ropey Guest's several entries this week.

The Newmarket trainer believes the son of Cable Bay deserves another chance at Group Two company on Thursday, after he belied his odds of 200-1 to finish sixth behind Arizona in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Ropey Guest  is also in a seven-furlong maiden at Newmarket on Friday and has two options as well on Saturday, in the bet365 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket and a six-furlong Novice Median Auction race at York.

"I'm just going to assess everything," said Margarson.

"I've got him in a novice at York, but I'm probably keen to go to the July Stakes with him on the back of his run at Royal Ascot. He's come out of it well.

"As he's still a maiden, it would be nice to get a win out of him, but that's the way it's gone so far."

Margarson senses significant improvement from Ropey Guest since his fine Royal Ascot run.

He said: "I've put him in the Superlative and I think he will be better when he goes over seven (furlongs), but he has sharpened up a lot for the Coventry.

"His work is more professional now. He's come on again for Ascot, so there's no reason why he shouldn't be up to that level.

"If he misses the July Stakes he'll probably go to York for the novice maiden."
