The world's oldest classic, the St Leger, takes place at Doncaster on Saturday and the Racing and Sports Pricing Model who sees the race as an exciting betting contest.

Last year the Leger was all about favourite Logician. He was a good winner, and it seems very unlikely we will see a winner quite so good this time around, but what we do have is a better betting race.

The three best hopes according to both the market and the Racing and Sports Pricing Model are three Royal Ascot winners - Pyledriver, Santiago and Hukum.

They fall into that order based on Royal Ascot ratings, Pyledriver winning the most prestigious King Edward before Santiago won the Queens Vase. Hukum just won a handicap - albeit the always fiercly competitive King George V Handicap.

Despite that, a few months on and the Model sees Hukum as the one to beat. His win in the Geoffrey Freer impressed along with sharply upward curve that his ratings profile appears to be on.

4/1 or a bit better can undersell his chances of taking another good step up here against the two better performed but perhaps more exposed chances.

Santiago has since won an Irish Derby and run third in a Goodwood Cup. Good runs but also good opportunities to post big ratings. He is the one that the Model thinks looks a bit overbet early doors.

Pyledriver also comes via a nice opportunity to post a big rating in the prestigious Great Voltiguer, so often the pick of the traditional trials for the Leger, but he deserves plenty of credit for having taken that oppourtunity and does arrive in the Leger with the best ratings. Given that the Model has no knock on him whatsoever, but it's real eyes are for the improving and well connected Hukum.
