TATTS TIARA - G1 1400m

Since its elevation to G1 status in 2007, the Winter Stks (or Tatts Tiara as it is now known) has been an important target for mare owners. Run as the last G1 of the season, it has previously been taken out by some highly regarded ladies including Miss Potential, Porto Roca, Bonanova twice, Dane Ripper, Mamzelle Pedrille and Melito. Which gal can gain that critical G1 to conclude the season?

PROFILING THE RACE

o Became G1 in 2007 - same time became a set weights race and was taken back to 1400m.

o Barriers have usually needed to be low in number from the Stradbroke start which is somewhat different to the big handicap.

o Not a great race for the favourites before Melito.

o Breakdown of fillies to mares - F (4) / M (6)

o Most Prevalent Age of winner - 3/4yo (4 times)

o Winningest Barrier Range <5-8> - 5 times

o Winners Average Price of winner - $10

o Races that the winner ran in prior - Stradbroke Hcp (4), Dane Ripper Stks (3), Gai Waterhouse Classic (1), Strawberry Road (1), Queensland Guineas (1)

RECENT WINNERS

2013 - RED TRACER 5m (Dane Shadow x Kisma) ($4.75)

Jockey: Nash Rawiller, Trainer: Chris Waller

Barrier: 16, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:24.20

Margin: 2.5L, Track: Slow, Starters: 16

2nd: Streama (57.0kg), 3rd: Floria (57.0kg)

Review: Has there been a more deserving G1 winner than Red Tracer? She has been around in everything, run well in most of them and now got the major for her owners. Before the race, Skyerush lost Blake Shinn on the way to the gates and another had to be resaddled causing the event to be delayed. And then you had to deal with the favourites drawing inside and outside. But on the very wet track, Red Tracer was in her element. Nash sat three out but held together. She levelled up at the 300m and trotted in. The class mares came to the fore.

Pear Tart was on a roll Picture: Racing and Sports
2012 - PEAR TART 3f (Dehere x Tangerine Dream) ($15)

Jockey: Jeff Lloyd, Trainer: John Thompson

Barrier: 14, Weight: 55.5kg, Gross Time: 1:23.37

Margin: 0.2L, Track: Dead, Starters: 18

2nd: Skyerush (57.0kg), 3rd: Gai’s Choice (57.0kg)

Review: Three weeks earlier, Pear Tart had come out Class 3 grade to win the Guineas on an absolute bog. Taking a race against the boys was a credit and now she had to meet a quality field of ladies at G1 level including the Stradbroke winner Mid Summer Music. This time on dead ground, Jeff Lloyd put her right out of trouble sitting second most of the way. With them all coming, she was under pressure but staved the rush off and gave Patinack their first G1 of the season in the last G1 of the season.

2011 - YOSEI 3f (Invincible Spirit x Fuji Fairy) ($15)

Jockey: Michelle Payne, Trainer: Stuart Webb

Barrier: 1, Weight: 55.5kg, Gross Time: 1:22.20

Margin: 0.2L, Track: Good, Starters: 14

2nd: Beaded (57.0kg), 3rd: Born To Rock (55.5kg)

Review: Out slowly, she railed up which she has done well in many of her best performances. She weaved a passage, grabbed Beaded’s back and took the gaps to just get up in the last 50m. Typical Yosei indeed.
