The Team Hawkes-trained Idance waltzed through soft going to score in the Mick Kerr Memorial Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.

Idance was sent out a $10 chance in the 1300m handicap on the back of mixed recent form but he was able to defy those odds under a cool ride from Berry, getting the better of Lunar Rise in the run home after travelling strongly to the 200m mark.

Kristy Lee finished third while race favourite Queen Of Kariba was well beaten after stepping away slowly and racing back in the field.

"He’s just taken a lot of time, he’s a really lovely horse,” said trainer Michael Hawkes.

"He was a very nervous horse when we first got him but he has started to relax.

Hawkes indicated that Idance would push on through the winter with the wet tracks to the liking of the lightly-raced five-year-old.

"He’s lightly-raced and he’s building up nicely," he said.

"As long as he pulls up well, we’ll keep going while the tracks are wet.”
