The Kiwis have won the event five times since it became a weight-for-age race in 1990, starting with Rough Habit's dominance from 1991 to 1993, but Kiwi visitors have come up short since King Keitel won in 2001.

“We are overdue,” Volkstok’n’barrell’s trainer Donna Logan said.

Logan has been thrilled with the Volkstok’n’barrell's progress since he finished a sound third in the Group 2 2016 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast earlier this month.

“He really needed the hit-out in the Hollindale,” Logan said.

“Volkstok'n'barrell got well back and had to make a long sweeping run. The month between runs told at the end, but I was very happy with the effort.

“He is spot on. He has really tightened up and the track should suit him.”
